Exonumia are numismatic items (such as tokens, medals, or scrip) other than coins and paper money. This includes "Good For" tokens, badges, counterstamped coins, elongated coins, encased coins, souvenir medallions, tags, wooden nickels and love tokens. The manufacture and practice of giving a “Love Token” seems to have originated in Great Britain in the early 1800s, and then migrated to the United States in the mid-to-late 1800s.
